Contact email for any questions or comments you have: closecallbaseball@gmail.com Close Call is an all-in-one Nationals site featuring in-depth analysis of the transactions, scores, and news of our hometown heroes. It features daily updates and commentary of signings, trades, minor league call-ups, and other player contract news year-round, as well as a description of each Nats game during the regular season and (we hope!) the postseason. Most of my stats and info come from MLBTradeRumors.com, ESPN.com, Nationals.com, and MLB.com. Unless I say so, none of the photos or videos I post belong to me, and I am not breaking any of the news.

Davey Johnson wants Bryce Harper to start on Opening Day
According to Jon Heyman of CBS, Nationals manager Davey Johnson wants phenom Bryce Harper to start in right field on Opening Day for the Nationals, which means the opening day lineup would look something like this:
1. Ian Desmond SS
2. Jayson Werth CF
3. Ryan Zimmerman 3B
4. Michael Morse LF
5. Adam LaRoche 1B
6. Bryce Harper RF
7. Danny Espinosa 2B
8. Wilson Ramos C
9. Stephen Strasburg P
It’s possible that Harper could bat as high as fifth, but I doubt it.
In the minors last year, Harper hit .297/.392 with 17 home runs, but he did not perform as well at double-a as he did at single-a; in 37 games at AA, he hit .256 with just 3 home runs. I find it hard to believe that they’d call Harper up without at least a few weeks to a month of experience at triple-a, but I have a feeling his performance in Spring Training will have a lot to do with whether or not he’ll be on the Opening Day roster. Despite Davey’s desires, I think that the season will start with Mike Cameron in center field and hitting in that 6 or 7 spot. Either way, it looks like we’ll be seeing Harper, the #1 overall draft pick in 2010, in the majors this year.
